Discover the Brecks, one of the great natural areas of Britain. Explore the distinctive landscape, wildlife and history of the area spanning 370 square miles across Norfolk and Suffolk in the heart of the East of England.

 | | | Wild Places in the Brecks
Only scattered woodlands grew on the impoverished soils of the Brecks after the last Ice Age, and this allowed early settlers to clear wooded areas and create open pasture-land. These first clearances, from about 3,000 BC, were the beginnning of human influence on the Brecks landscape.

Rabbits seem always to have been part of the countryside, but they were introduced by the Normans in the twelth century, and had to be carefully nurtured in special enclosures called warrens. The word comes from the French word 'garenne'.
