WHERE IS THE BRECKS – the Brecks spans 370 sq. miles/940 sq. kilometres across Norfolk and Suffolk in the heart of The East of England – one of the driest parts of Britain.

Discover Strange and Beautiful Places The Brecks, a landscape of tranquil forest, open heathland and agricultural land, is home to many unique or distinctive birds, plants and animals. Catch a glimpse of the Stone Curlew at Weeting Heath or spot roaming deer in the Forest – but there is much more.

Explore our History and Ancient Landscapes The Brecks is steeped in human history stretching back to the Stone Age. A Neolithic Flint mine (The Brecks is the flint capital of the UK), Medieval rabbit farming and 19th Century landed Estates are amongst the many clues to human settlement to be found in The Brecks. This is a landscape which remains full of historical and ecological interest.
The effects of the last 'ice age’ can be seen nowhere else in Britain and Ireland as extensively as in The Brecks. 12,000 years ago, Ice bubbles created Pingos and perma frost created distinctive patterns and features. Brecks RDPE- Leader The Leader approach is a delivery mechanism under the new Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) 2007-2013. It is a method of harnessing local knowledge to enable a “bottom up”, community led approach to delivery of RDPE funding in rural areas. for more information click here

Celebrate Wimbledon in The Brecks
You can join in with the spirit of Wimbledon right here in The Brecks. Kings House Garden in Thetford has tennis courts available to hire throughout the summer. Celebrate National Mammal Week at Lakenheath Fen Nature Reserve on Sunday 5th when you can take part in a Mammal Safari, searching for tracks and signs of mammals on the nature reserve, particularly focusing on looking for signs of Otters.
The Royal Norfolk Show 2009, takes place this week on 1st and 2nd July, with local suppliers, producers and businesses. for more information click here

Travel around The Brecks
without a car and reduce your carbon footprint. Help us to protect the special landscape of The Brecks by exploring the area without a car (much healthier too). Bring your own bicycle or hire one here and have it delivered to your accommodation to await your arrival.

The Brecks Bus (01638 608080) and The Flexibus (0845 6002315) are ring and ride services that will take you from your door and get you out and about in the countryside. Walk, Cycle and Horse ride off the beaten track The distinctive Brecks landscape offers an amazing variety of cycling, walking and horse riding routes and trails. Follow an ancient trackway and way marked trails such as The Peddars Way and Icknield Way.
